Rabbit in the headlight? How to look comfortable and confident on camera.

Finding it difficult to remember what to say on camera?

In my experience, one of the biggest barriers that stops businesses and organisations from harnessing the power of video, is their nerves about appearing on camera.

I'm regularly asked how to write engaging scripts, how to avoid looking like a rabbit in the headlights, and how to remember your lines when the camera starts rolling.

Michael Wood, Managing Director of Lichfield-based video production company, Embrace Video Ltd.

I've got over 13 years' experience as a former BBC and ITV television director, where I helped hundreds of contributors to look comfortable on video.

I've worked with household names including actors, TV presenters, politicians and celebrities. It's been a pleasure to direct shoots with Mel B, Ricky Gervais, Dynamo (magician) and McFly (boyband) to name just a few.

I now use this expertise to help businesses and organisations present to the camera with confidence.

So, how can you remember your lines and present to the camera like a pro?

1. Keep it short

Help yourself out by keeping what you want to say short and to the point.

2. Use bullet points

Avoid locking yourself too rigidly into a script. Talk around bullet points instead.

3. Slow down

Don't try to squeeze too much information into your videos. Take your time and speak as naturally as possible.

Practice makes perfect.

If presenting to the camera is new to you, don't forget that you don't have to post your first few attempts at video.

Simply practice talking to the camera naturally and you'll notice yourself improve.

And don't forget - done is better than perfect!
